Hmm …
Today is the deadline for the Trump administration to recertify Iran's compliance with the nuclear deal, or to say Iran is violating it
— Sarah Westwood (@sarahcwestwood) July 17, 2017
Throughout the day there’s been a tease that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson would “very shortly” make an announcement on the Iranian nuclear deal, and now, as it closes in on 11 p.m., we’re not even sure this is it.
The Associated Press is reporting the breaking news that the Trump administration has certified that Iran is in compliance with the terms of the deal, but is “in default of the spirit.”
BREAKING: Officials: Trump administration certifies Iran is complying with nuclear deal but says it's 'in default of the spirit'
— The Associated Press (@AP) July 18, 2017
It’s a “breaking” story, too, so there’s not even a link to click yet to read the explanation.
can't decide if the AP just wrote an non-optimal headline, or if this is a really a quote that means… whatttt??

Wtf does that even mean?!?
— Rohan Mathews (@diabloroh) July 18, 2017
What does that even mean?

what the hell does that mean?
— harris (@canadeeana) July 18, 2017
Uh, what the hell does that mean? Either they are compliant or they are not. The "spirit" is not sanction-able.

pretty sure default of spirit has no legal standing.
— bear (@bearzig) July 18, 2017
How do you "default in spirit?" Do you obey but just silently fume?
— Meg ✌??? (@sassybibrarian) July 18, 2017
But wait, @realDonaldTrump was going to tear this deal up. Suckers.

Oh but "I will cancel the disastrous Iran Nuclear deal!" RIGHT?

Oh well. On the plus side at least he doesn't have dozens and dozens of tweets from 2015 ridiculing it. https://t.co/RqvZOjN4Xx

#BREAKING Trump keeps Iran deal, but threatens non-nuclear sanctions: US official

AFP seems to be on to something; the Trump administration will certify Iran’s compliance with the deal, but only reluctantly, while also threatening new sanctions.
U.S. expected to certify Iran complying with nuclear deal tonight but with big caveat + threat of new sanctions from Trump NSC and Treasury

So much for John Bolton’s caution from earlier in the day.
Certifying compliance of the #Iran nuclear deal risks damaging American credibility should a decision later be made to tear up the deal.
— John Bolton (@AmbJohnBolton) July 17, 2017
The #Iran deal is not renegotiable. There's no chance #Iran will agree to any serious changes b/c Obama gave them such favorable terms.
