Rapper Ludacris headed to Cuba to play Independence Day gig at Guantanamo Bay

Three years before President Obama completed the normalization of U.S. diplomatic relations with Cuba by doing the wave with Raul Castro at an exhibition baseball game in Havana, Jay-Z and Beyoncé proved just who’s really America’s royal family by celebrating their anniversary there, likely taking advantage of the Obama administration’s eased travel restrictions to the communist paradise.

In a surprise announcement this week, rapper Ludacris announced that not only was he headed to Cuba; he’d be playing an Independence Day concert at Guantanamo Bay — the naval base, not the terrorist detention facility.

The Miami Herald reports that there’s no chance the noise will disturb the remaining 79 prisoners at the terrorist detention facility, which is miles from the concert venue, which is essentially a parking lot. The free-of-charge “Freedom Festival” will feature family activities, a fireworks show, and a 90-minute concert by the Grammy-award winning rapper.

Business Insider’s Oliver Darcy provides a timely reminder that Gawker recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and is for sale, if anyone’s interested.

“Gitmo hasn’t seen a star with as big a name as Ludacris in several years,” Navy Chief Petty Officer Monique Hilley said. “The base is really looking forward to it.”
