Democrats have long been complaining that registering to vote is too difficult — so difficult, in fact, that they have begun charging anyone opposed to changing the system with supporting “voter suppression.” It’s a non-problem that the 1993 “Motor Voter Law” was supposed to have solved, especially among young people, by allowing prospective voters to register when they visited the DMV to obtain or renew a driver’s license.

That’s still too difficult. That’s why California Gov. Jerry Brown today signed the “New Motor Voter Act” into law today. The fundamental difference is that anyone obtaining or renewing a driver’s license is registered to vote automatically without having to fill out a separate form. Those who don’t wish to be registered must opt out.

A big fan of the legislation is Hillary Clinton, who herself proposed “universal, automatic voter registration” for “every citizen in every state in the union.”
