Rapper Talib Kweli to join occupation of Gov. Rick Scott's office

The Dream Defenders, who have been staging an occupation of the Florida capitol building for nearly three weeks, will be joined next week by rapper Talib Kweli, who announced he’ll be joining the sit-in next Thursday and Friday. Other celebrities who’ve stopped by Tallahassee in solidarity include Harry Belafonte and Jesse Jackson.

The Dream Defenders, who have been allowed to sleep over in the capitol building on nights and weekends as part of their protest, claimed a victory yesterday when Florida House Speaker Will Weatherford announced the House would hold hearings on the state’s “Stand Your Ground” self-defense law sometime this fall. Gov. Rick Scott sat down with the group’s leaders July 18 and defended the legislation, prompting the group to continue living outside his office indefinitely.

The group has also won the support of Def Jam co-founder Russell Simmons.
