Jared Loughner pleads guilty to Tucson shootings, spared death penalty

Jared Lee Loughner, who is charged with killing six people and wounding 13, including then-Congresswoman Gabriele Giffords at a town hall event in Tucson, Arizona in January 2011, has pleaded guilty in the case and will be sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole.

Loughner’s federal psychologist, Dr. Christina Pietz, had testified that Loughner at times had doubted that Giffords had survived the shooting.

The plea deal spares Loughner the death penalty.

Loughner is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 15.
