Entertainment Weekly reporter Dana Schwartz dug herself into a deep hole when she tried using prohibition as a valid argument for repealing the Second Amendment. Because, you know, prohibition worked SO well for us.
People are like "You can't ban guns! It's in the constitution!" as if we didn't once in our nation's history randomly decide that there would be no more alcohol allowed
— Dana Schwartz (@DanaSchwartzzz) March 3, 2018
It wasn’t even in the constitution, it was an amendment!
— Ella Dawson (@brosandprose) March 3, 2018
People like this shouldn’t even have social media accounts, let alone a blue check mark next to their name.
An amendment makes it part of the Constitution. Just like the 13th amendment overruled slavery. Additionally, how well did prohibition go? There was no drinking after they made it illegal or was there more mass shootings than anytime in the history of our country b/cblack market?
— Chris Mechs (@ryius) March 3, 2018
Amendments to the Constitution ARE part of the Constitution.
What's pathetic is no one is suggesting a ban on guns. They are suggesting gun control. It makes it very hard to sympathize with Americans when they don't acknowledge what is being said and not being said. We live nicely in Canada with gun control.
— Deborah V. Rose ? (@DeborahVRose) March 3, 2018
That’s great and all, but Canada wasn’t founded on the same principles as America…so there’s that.
Liberals should stop talking about repealing the second amendment, it’s exactly why people on the right won’t cooperate, they know liberals are being disingenuous about common sense gun regulations, what they really mean is: KILL #2A
— Jay Rue (@jaybluuee) March 3, 2018
BINGO.
Yes any amendment can be made null & void by passing a new amendment. Congress passes amendment by 2/3 majority. It then goes directly to the States. A proposed amendment becomes part of the Constitution as soon as it is ratified by 3/4th’s of the States (38 of 50 States).
— Joel Horton (@joel_horton5) March 3, 2018
And how many states do you REALLY think are going to sign off on this?
I support gun control and think the 2A has been misconstrued. But the right to drink alcohol was never spelled out in its own amendment. Plus, when the alcohol ban happened, it was via constitutional amendment, not a statute. So it's not really relevant to the gun control debate.
— Charlottehasadog (@charlotte_heinz) March 3, 2018
People on your own side disagree with you. Sad.
We used to ban guns all the time in this country. The NRA wants you to think Americans were always walking around with guns strapped to our sides, but it's just not true.
— ace-o-aces (@aceoaces) March 3, 2018
Why does EVERYTHING always have to come back to the NRA?
How'd that alcohol ban work out for you? Reduce crime?
— Michael Hirschkowitz (@MHirschkowitz) March 3, 2018
Gee, people still wanted it so…they went to the black market. SHOCKER.
Nope, it was a bad idea, so we repealed an amendment! Hmmm… now what’s another amendment we could repeal….
— Dana Schwartz (@DanaSchwartzzz) March 3, 2018
Advocating for constantly changing our Constitution is stupid. We’d end up with thousands of amendments that put something into law and take it back out of law, etc.
And when people weren’t agreeing with her, Dana decided to “clarify” her position (which really did nothing for her):
Lol people are responding to this like “DUHHH PROHIBITION DIDNT WORK” as if the point wasn’t that the constitution can so easily be changed that we did and undid a super dumb mistake
— Dana Schwartz (@DanaSchwartzzz) March 3, 2018
We repealed the 18th amendment because bad amendments can be repealed if they aren’t working. What’s another amendment now….?
— Dana Schwartz (@DanaSchwartzzz) March 3, 2018
So you would like 2nd Amendment repealed? Really? Please learn history as to why FF broke from England & why the 1st & 2nd amends were written first. I’ll help. To get away from a tyrannical govt. The Constitution limits the govt to avoid that happening again. Lose 2A, lose all.
— Suz ? (@susieskickinass) March 3, 2018
Translation: Go back to high school government class.
I think most of that view is stemming from paranoia over a government that does mass spying. People are afraid that without guns, no revolt can happy if the US government turns tyrannical.
— That Bitch from the Matrix (@Hyperpowder) March 3, 2018
The ENTIRE reason the Founding Fathers put the Second Amendment in place was to keep the government from becoming tyrannical. That’s not paranoia. That was their reality.
Yes! Let’s try and ban another amendment that would undoubtedly cause crime to skyrocket and benefit organized crime! Great idea! Worked before! *how’s the war on cocaine and heroin going?? **glad there’re no porous borders
