Family Research Council shooter pleads guilty, intended to kill 'as many as possible'

Floyd Corkins today pleaded guilty to charges of interstate transportation of a firearm, assault with intent to kill and committing an act of terrorism in connection with the shooting at the Family Research Council headquarters in Washington, D.C., last August. That shooting injured Leo Johnson, who wrestled Corkins to the ground, preventing what could have been a massacre.

CBS News reports that Corkins told FBI agents he wanted to “kill as many as possible” to “make a statement against the people who work in that building … and with their stance against gay rights and Chick-fil-A.” As Twitchy reported, Corkins was carrying 15 Chick-fil-A sandwiches in a bag when he was subdued; at a hearing he admitted he intended to smear the sandwiches in the faces of his victims.

In a statement following the shooting, Family Research Council’s Tony Perkins alleged that the Southern Poverty Law Center had given Corkins a license to shoot by listing the FRC as a hate group on its website. The SPLC at the time called the claim “outrageous,” but Corkins acknowledged in a hearing that he had indeed visited the SPLC’s website, which identified the FRC to him as “an anti-gay organization.”
