Shooting at Family Research Council, suspect in custody; Update: Bomb squad enters building; Update: Mitt Romney issues statement; Update: Shooter ID’d

A security guard was shot this morning at the Family Research Council’s headquarters in Washington, D.C.

“The police are investigating this incident.  Our first concern is with our colleague who was shot today. Our concern is for him and his family.”

Twitchy will continue to monitor this story as it develops.

WJLA in Washington is reporting that the police have taken a suspect into custody.

A security guard was shot in in the arm late Wednesday morning inside an office building near the heart of Chinatown in Northwest Washington, police say.

The shooting took place either near or at the offices of the Family Research Council, which is located at 801 G Street, about a block west of the Verizon Center. Police have a suspect in custody.

The shooter’s motivations may have been political:

The suspect “made statements regarding their policies, and then opened fire with a gun striking a security guard,” a source told Fox News.

Authorities were treating the attack as a case of domestic terrorism.

Thankfully, the security guard, Leo Johnson, is all right:

According to Fox News, sources say that the suspect is in his twenties and possibly got into the building by posing as an intern.

Please note: this is unconfirmed.

Mitt Romney has issued a statement on the shooting.

The Log Cabin Republicans have issued a statement as well:

Log Cabin Republicans, the nation’s largest gay GOP group, responded to reports of a shooting outside the Family Research Council’s Washington, D.C. office.

LCR executive director R. Clarke Cooper, in a statement released about 2:40 p.m. Aug. 15, said, “As fellow conservatives, Log Cabin Republicans are often in the same room with the Family Research Council. Though we rarely see eye to eye, we absolutely condemn the violence that occurred today.”

Cooper also said, “Keeping in mind that at this time we know little about the shooter or his motives, whatever our political disagreements, in this country, we use ballots, not bullets, to address them. We offer prayers for the injured security guard, his family, and everybody at the FRC building, barely a fifteen minute walk away from Log Cabin Republicans national headquarters. In many ways, this is a reminder that we aren’t so far apart.”

NBC is now reporting that the suspect was carrying Chick-fil-A promotional materials and food as well as weapons, though the FBI has not yet confirmed.

The shooter has been identified as 28-year-old Floyd Corkins of Herndon, Virginia.

Twitterers and other organizations expressed their support for the victim and FRC employees:

(Note: WJLA initially reported that two people were shot; it now reports that only the security guard was wounded.)

We at Twitchy offer our thoughts and prayers to the Family Research Council.

#prayers Hopefully the guard will be okay.

  • HoundOfDoom

Best wishes for a fast and full recovery for the victims @ the FRC.

  • Candi Nordhagen

eternal God, you are our refuge, and underneath are Your everlasting arms: and You will thrust out the enemy. Lord, thank you that your arms are underneath us to support us. In Jesus’ name.

  • catholic_citizen

I will be lighting a candle for the guard and his family at Mass today (Holy Day of Obligation, Catholic readers..). I also have to ask when will the president call and express concern for the guard. Sandra Fluke is called a bad name and he calls an emergency press conference. A man gets shot by a person who allegedly denounced the FRC before he opened fire – and there is nothing? Fox is running the story – surprisingly so is Nothing from CNN, yet.

    • Tonya Price

I doubt if Obama really cares, but I do. I pray that the person who was shot will recover quickly and that the perpetrator will be captured and prosecuted.

    • bleuze

You’re asking too much of Obama!

    • rivers

Thanks for the reminder, I totally forgot.

    • D. Tree

[ Sandra Fluke is called a bad name and he calls an emergency press conference.]

Well, it looks good on paper… but you did just make that up.

  • BKA

Liberal media is quick to blame conservatives for shootings — doubtful they will even report on this one. Hope the security guard will fully recover.

  • lazypadawan

This story is going to be buried, just like all violence against conservatives. Had this guard been shot at Ye Olde Abortion Mille, it would be all over the damn place by now. Hell, if you hear anything about it at all, it will be from leftists chortling away at how one of “Them” deserved to be shot and it’s a shame nobody died. Bet on it. I wouldn’t be surprised if violence continues to escalate against those the left considers enemies.

    • D. Tree

Bet on it? Ok, I’m calling your bluff. Liberal or conservative, the media loves these terrible spectacles. They don’t care as much about the politics of the perp as you do. Liberals, of course say the same thing you just said, but they switch places. Neither is right. Both points of view are self-serving more than anything. Let’s stop using these tragedies as an excuse to advance our own agendas.

  • Tonya Price

According to the MSM, it’s “justice” when conservative organizations are attacked. It’s really disturbing to see how one sided the MSM’s reporting- or should I say, “failure to report,” really is.

    • D. Tree

These paranoid views about the media are silly. I’m curious why you put quotes around the word “justice” as if you are quoting something that was really said in the MSM. The fact is, you fabricated the whole comment. You never heard anyone in any media say this was “justice”…. you’d rather make things up like this, so you can advance your personal agenda. Isn’t it time we stopped using these tragedies to serve our own agendas?

Google just took this story off trending U.S. news..completely wiped.’s back but now only top two stories show in have to jump link.

    Leftist jihad

  • Naqamel

It’s gotten to the point where a liberal nut shooting is a “dog bites man” story.

  • Rick Nelson

Do you think the media will try to blame this on some conservative?

    • D. Tree

It appears to me, that many folks *want* this to be blamed on a conservative, so their claims of a liberal media will be fulfilled. But, too bad for you the initial reports are this was probably a crazy liberal, and that’s all the media is talking about…. so what does that do to your point of view about media bias? Well, it disproves it.

      • Desiree

Ms/Mr. Tree (sorry no first name, so have no idea): I have read through all of your replies to people on here now and I can tell that you are the one with the slanted viewpoint. First of all, are you the slightest bit aware that for years now the MSM (mainstream media) has been disgustingly biased toward Obama and the democrats? They have been caught several times editing footage so that what they air appears in the favor of the left? They cut important context out of interviews (which just happened on 60 minutes, Sunday night when Shieffer interviewed Romney and Ryan.) They give approximately 3-5 times the amount of air time to democrats then they do republicans, and it goes on an on. Unfortunately, the MSM journalists have reduced themselves to being not much more then tabloid commentators. If you want a whole story, due to their repeated practices, you cannot rely on them as a worthy news source. Therefore, my suggestion to you, watch Fox, as they even have plenty of democrats or left leaning personalities on their news shows such as Greta Von Susteren, Shepard Smith, Geraldo Rivera, Juan Williams, Bob Beckel, and more. If that’s not your cup of tea, then get news from independent news sources on-line or through talk radio. Just be sure that you listen to both sides, not just one who tends to report only half stories, or half truths of what is going on anyway. And, then maybe when you comment on here, you’ll have the full story and will know what you’re talking about.

  • Shayn Roby

My prayers are with the guard. God bless @tperkins & FRC. I saw him@ Under God Indivisible in Dallas, what a class act.

  • Desiree

I highly suspect that if the MSM and/or Obama team acknowledges this, it will be under the pretense of using it as an example for “gun control,” and not out of concern for the guard or for why one of their “own” (i.e., liberals) has resorted to violence.

    • D. Tree

Wow, we are really desperate to turn these incidents into political footballs… looks like you are cued up and ready to go! Liberals, of course, behave the same way – hoping the perp is a conservative so they can say the same kind of thing you just said. Neither is appropriate.

      • Desiree

So, I’m guessing you didn’t watch any of the early news reports yesterday on this incident? Apparently, it was political and premeditated as the assailant entered under the guise of being an intern, and then shouted some sort of “political statement” as he shot the security guard. He then told the security guard that, (although he shot him), he didn’t mean harm to him, but that his “issue was with the organization and what they stood for.” So, next time you wish to attempt to belittle me, you should take the time to get some facts. I was not desperate to turn anything into a political football. I was offering an opinion based upon the news reports and the fact that Obama and team, or the MSM, at the time, were silent. No concern showed for this security guard who is a hero. Of course, when Sandra Fluke was called a name then all heck broke loose, didn’t it? So, it seems that the only political grandstanding being done is by the Obama Administration when they feel it might help their own agenda. The security guard, although having been shot, still managed to defend the occupants of the building by wrestling the assailant to the ground and securing him, and at the very least, you would think that Obama might have had something nice to say about this hardworking American just doing his job!

  • Mike Latimer

Has Brian Ross from ABC indicated yet what organization the shooter represented?

  • $13614178

The demonrat press are going to have a really difficult time calling this shooter a conservative or a tea partier . God bless the security guard who put his life on the line for his fellow Americans .

  • $30423294

You can’t be surprised about no White House response.

Obama famously said “you must punish your enemies.”

Remember that, two years ago on a campaign stop? “You must punish your enemies.”

I wondered if the President understood that if Satan were to give his own Sermon on the Mount — call it, the Sermon from the Pit — he would say: “You have heard it said that you must love your enemies. But I tell you, you must punish your enemies.”

He’s not a good man. No.

    • D. Tree

Quotes are always best put in context.

[And if Latinos sit out the election instead of saying, we’re gonna
punish our enemies and we’re gonna reward our friends who stand with us
on issues that are important to us, if they don’t see that kind of
upsurge in voting in this election, then I think it’s gonna be harder
and that’s why I think it’s so important that people focus on voting on
