Sandra Fluke retweet: Transgender students deserve equal access to everything, including sports

Sandra Fluke has tweeted about transgender issues on numerous occasions:

Back to today’s retweet, we’re not entirely clear what “equal access to everything” means. We think it refers to the idea that transgender students who were born one gender should be allowed to compete in high school sports as the other gender if they want to, no questions asked.

According to the New York Times, most of the transgender student-athletes who have wanted to play high school sports “have been biological females who wanted to play on boys’ teams — often a less controversial transition that ignites fewer fears about a student’s gaining competitive advantages.”

But what if a student-athlete who was born male wants to compete against girls? Doesn’t that pose obvious problems?

Steven Crowder wrote an excellent column about this back in March.

An excerpt:

Enter Fallon Fox, a male-to-female transgendered person, who has now decided to make a living by beating up women. With a record of 2-0, none of Fallon’s female victims have even made it past two minutes of the first round.  If you were to watch these fights, it would look very much like you would expect … a man knocking a woman unconscious.

In the name of political correctness, leftists have come out championing the cause, as Fallon ragdolls female opponents into oblivion.

Transgender kids are often subject to ridicule. Their lives are often not easy, and we understand and sympathize with the impulse to want to help.

That said, there are basic biological differences between the sexes (for example, differences in testosterone levels). Those biological differences typically give boys a large advantage over girls in sports. For example, the high school record in the high school boy’s outdoor mile (3:53.43) is more than 40 seconds faster than record in the high school girl’s outdoor mile (4:35.24). There are similar gender differentials in all other track and field records.

And, as Crowder notes, allowing biological boys to compete against girls in contact sports poses a threat to girls’ safety.

The rights of the non-transgendered students, such as the right to compete safely on a level playing field, cannot be dismissed.  Again, it’s a nice impulse to want to help, but “no questions asked” is no way to go about it.
