Sarah Longwell finally said the quiet part in plain English.
Asked why Democrat leaders and donors seem more comfortable with her than with progressives in their own party, the Bulwark publisher answered that she actually votes for Democrats.
SHOCKER. Ok, not really.
That is not a slip. That is a résumé update.
For years, cable bookings and news chyrons have introduced Longwell as a Republican strategist. The label did a lot of work. It let panels pretend a dissent from inside the party was on offer, when the dissent was aimed at electing the other party.

The record was already public. Longwell helped build Republican Voters Against Trump and the Republican Accountability Project, projects that spent heavily to beat Donald Trump in 2020 and again in 2024. She publishes The Bulwark. Her newer argument, laid out in a book released last month, is that the GOP has to be beaten at the ballot box until it changes course.
Wikipedia now lists her party affiliation as Republican before 2025. The vote confession simply matched the paperwork.
None of that is illegal. Former Republicans are allowed to change teams. Voters are allowed to notice when the old jersey stays on for the cameras.
However, a strategist who votes for Democrats, raises money to defeat Republicans, and still gets booked as the Republican in the room is a reflection on how useless the mainstream media really is. I get it, booking her as some caring, principled Republican who gave up EVERYTHING to stop Trump is far better television for say, CNN, but it's really not true anymore.
She's a Democrat who votes for Democrats.
