A newly circulated video from a 2016 Detroit conference shows Abdul El-Sayed stating onstage that he holds dual citizenship in the United States and Egypt.
Yup, you read that correctly.
The clip, recorded while he served as Detroit’s health director at a GlobeMed event, has understandably drawn fresh attention because his campaign has insisted he was never a dual citizen.
In the footage, El-Sayed links the claim to summers spent abroad as a child, describing a place where he came to understand the absence of a right to self-government. He has long told a related story of being questioned by Egyptian police during one of those visits after publicly criticizing then-President Hosni Mubarak. The remarks amount to at least the second documented instance in which he presented himself as an Egyptian citizen. A 2014 academic résumé, published around the time he joined Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, listed his citizenships as the United States and Egypt. That document was later removed from the site where it appeared after reporters inquired.

Campaign spokeswoman Roxie Richner told the Washington Free Beacon that El-Sayed “is not a dual citizen by any verifiable metric and never has been.” She said he was told as a child that his grandfather had sought Egyptian citizenship on his behalf because his parents were born in Egypt, but that the information was secondhand and incorrect.
El-Sayed was born in Michigan in 1984. His parents emigrated from Egypt to the Detroit area in 1978. He is now seeking the Democratic nomination for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat in 2026, a contest that has also drawn attention to his past statements on Egyptian politics and to overseas property ties reported by the same outlet.
All of that being said, the video undercuts the campaign’s earlier explanation that the résumé entry was simply an old mistake, because the onstage statement came two years after the résumé and was delivered in public while he held a senior city post.
Soooo ... someone screwed up, and it sounds like it was El-Sayed.
