CNN spent Monday night treating artificial intelligence like a pending apocalypse Trump was too reckless to regulate, then invited Ben Shapiro onto NewsNight and immediately regretted the decision.
As one on the Left often does.
Abby Phillip teed up the usual doomsday framing — jobs gone, humanity next, please clap for more guardrails — and Shapiro proceeded to explain that a lot of the loudest “we’re all going to die” talk is coming from closed-model CEOs who would love Washington to write rules that freeze out competitors while China sprints past the United States.
The chyrons kept screaming about urgent warnings. Shapiro kept talking like someone who had actually thought about incentives, liability, and Beijing.
Phillip’s follow-up face did the rest.

... the apocalyptic talk very hard are people who are heads of closed models. They're very afraid of open models that theoretically could challenge them, and also they have liability in court that open models don't. So looking for regulation for a sort of regulatory harbor that allows them to develop without the possibility of products liability is a good idea for them. So I think that's one argument.
The other argument is the argument that Alex Karp over at Palantir has made, which I think is exactly right, which is China has no concern about any of this. China's just gonna race forward, and China, if they outstrip us they beat us in the AI race, then we'll all be using Chinese models, and that will come along with all the strings that are attached to that, including military dominance by China."

Now one fears this just splits totally along political lines. Trump and Shapiro don’t want regulation, aren’t concerned the world is soon to end and China will “win” if the USA doesn’t.
*Hence* the whole left will double down on AI doomerism.
Doomerism is the left's go-to.
