George W. Bush was president the morning those planes hit.
He had to walk into a classroom, then walk out and tell the country we were at war. Twenty-five years later he’s back at the site with a white ribbon on his lapel, and New York’s socialist mayor is in his space talking at him.
Ok, maybe not really talking to him ... but he's there with him.
I think it's safe to say the face W. is making in the presence of Mamdani is how many of us feel today.

Bush’s mouth is a straight line. He’s not smiling. He’s not nodding along. He’s giving Mamdani the look you give a guy you have to be polite to because the cameras are rolling and it’s September 11.
That tracks.
Families of the dead asked Mamdani to stay home. Giuliani and Pataki said the same thing. His chief counsel once represented an al-Qaeda operative tied to the Pentagon hijackers, and Mamdani still handed that lawyer the ceremonial pen after signing 9/11 orders. There were petitions. There was history. And he showed up anyway.
So of course Bush looks like he’d rather be anywhere else. The former president who spent years insisting America was at war with terrorists, not a faith, is now standing next to a mayor a lot of first responders still don’t trust. Protocol says you don’t make a scene at a memorial. The face says everything the protocol won’t. I’m tired of being told this is “unity.” Unity would be the current mayor of New York reading the room. Instead we get a Getty frame of Bush enduring the conversation while Mamdani leans in. If that’s the image they wanted out of the 25th anniversary, they got it. It just doesn’t look like respect.
It looks like Bush counting the seconds until he can walk away.
