Writer wants to 'tax the f**k out of' billionaire owner of Gothamist to publicly fund local journalists

TD Ameritrade founder Joe Ricketts, who owned the sites DNAinfo and Gothamist, announced on Thursday that both publications were being shut down immediately — just a week after reporters and editors voted to join a union.

“DNAinfo is, at the end of the day, a business, and businesses need to be economically successful if they are to endure,” Ricketts wrote.

HuffPost reporter Alexander Kaufman, himself a member of Writers Guild of America East, had his own proposal to keep DNAinfo and Gothamist, or at least a reasonable replacement, up and running.
