'Feminist' banned from being banned: TIME removes frontrunner from word banishment poll, apologizes

As Twitchy reported, feminists flipped out when TIME magazine suggested banning the word “feminist” by including it in its fourth annual “word banishment poll.” As the word “poll” implies, the decision was to be left up to the readership, but managing editor Nancy Gibbs has apologized and announced that “feminist” has been removed as an option:

TIME apologizes for the execution of this poll; the word ‘feminist’ should not have been included in a list of words to ban. While we meant to invite debate about some ways the word was used this year, that nuance was lost, and we regret that its inclusion has become a distraction from the important debate over equality and justice.

TIME, it looks like you did invite debate about ways the word was used this year; the fact that “feminist” was far and away the leading candidate to be “banned” isn’t a distraction, but a clear message from the public.
