Abdul El-Sayed has spent the last couple weeks channeling his inner WWE heel, calling Mike Rogers a coward, daring him to five debates, promising no “safe quarter,” and even challenging the 63-year-old to a no-pads tackle football beatdown like they are both still in middle school. So of course Fox 2’s Roop Raj and the Michigan Debate Commission went ahead and scheduled an actual debate for September 15.

... have yet to hear back from the Rogers team. We have reached out multiple times in the last two weeks. We have not received a response. Bottom line, the debate stage is being prepared, a live broadcast is scheduled and two podiums will be present.
Republican and Democratic political hopefuls need to show up for debates. They often refuse to take part in this basic step in any election. Curating social media ads and then appearing on network cable channels of their political leaning for easy interviews does nothing for the electorate back here in Michigan. We have unapologetically been the station that has set up debates, invited candidates with more than enough notice and even set up an empty chair for one candidate who chose not to attend. Anyone running for these critical offices should be able to afford one hour of their time on a Tuesday evening so that voters can hear them out. This isn’t a challenge as much as it is an opportunity for these aspiring leaders to showcase who they are beyond a 30 second sound bite. In full transparency, please see letter below. We will let you know when we hear back from the Rogers campaign. We sincerely hope both candidates will be there on September 15th. There is still plenty of time.
