Rep. Debbie Dingell just delivered the purest distillation of modern Democratic strategy: principles are optional, popularity is mandatory, and a solid set of biceps apparently seals the deal.
Appearing on a midterms panel, the longtime Michigan Democrat was pressed about progressive Senate hopeful Abdul El-Sayed sharing stages with radical Twitch streamer Hasan Piker. Rather than condemn the guy whose greatest hits include defending Hamas over Israel, calling certain Orthodox Jews “inbred,” and declaring America “deserved” 9/11, Dingell offered a masterclass in shrugs.

Dingell’s candor is almost refreshing in its cynicism. No high-minded defense of “engaging the youth.” No tortured attempt to separate the message from the messenger. Just a blunt admission that in today’s Democratic ecosystem, looks and follower counts outrank everything else. Principles? Those are for the old party that no longer exists.
