Platner’s Heart Tattoo: Covering the Swastika, Keeping the Obsession

If something goes wrong, Graham Platner always has one group to blame: The Jews. He abused women. Blame the Jews. He committed adultery during his very short marriage: The Jews. He got a DUI: The Jews. He has a Nazi tattoo: the Jews. He had an account on a site known for child predators: the Jews. He said women are responsible for their own rapes: The Jews. He said Black people don't tip: The Jews. He has PTSD: The Jews and Susan Collins.

Platner could have had the Nazi tattoo removed some time over the last seventeen years. Even if one buys the story Platner didn't know it was a 'Nazi' tattoo, by 2013 when he dated Lyndsey Fifield, he certainly knew. We know that because he told her it was a Nazi tattoo. He comes from generational wealth. His parents gifted him hundreds of thousands of dollars for a home. Certainly, they would have helped him out with the money to laser off a Nazi tattoo.

Platner tried to erase his Nazi tattoo by covering it with another. But the original is still there permanently inked on his chest, right near his heart. His endless, obsessive rants about Israel and 'the Jews' make it clear: no matter what he layers on top, the sentiment is marrow-deep.

It’s like a dog peeing on the rug. You can blot and scrub the surface all you want, but once that stench soaks into the padding underneath, it never really leaves. Some things can’t be covered up. They just fester.

That's the reality. Platner is a very disturbed man. He's a rabid anti-Semite. Beyond that, he has severe PTSD, according this his Doctors (although Platner doesn't believe PTSD exists). He very clearly has impulse control issues. He was sexting (committing adultery) with dozens of women and he has only been married three years. This is not normal behavior. As much as I loathe Platner, I appreciate his military service. I think he was already a very messed up person before he went to war. I think more will come out about his past including why he was expelled from his boarding school after one semester (allegedly).

The Department of Veterans Affairs is providing Platner with financial support and access to mental health care. That is a good thing, and he should fully utilize those services. What he should not do is treat the United States Senate as his personal rehabilitation center. Hopefully, they can help him work through why he has insatiable hatred for Jews.

The Senate is not a rehabilitation center. It is the chamber where clear-headed leaders are entrusted with making consequential decisions that affect every American. That role requires focus, stability, and rigorous judgment, qualities incompatible with ongoing serious personal struggles. Nor is it a place for anyone who has shown sympathy for Nazis.
