He Stole an American’s Identity, Racked Up DUIs, Killed a Grandfather — Then His Church Helped Hide Him

This story is infuriating and will quickly dispel the myth that illegal immigration is a 'victimless' crime.

This was an everyday American man just trying to take care of his wife and kids. One day he gets pulled over by the cops and is told he has outstanding traffic warrants tied to a driver’s license issued in Missouri. He explains that he’s never had a license in Missouri—he’s lived his whole life in another state.

Then the IRS contacts him, claiming he hasn’t been paying enough taxes because he’s failing to report income from multiple jobs. He insists he’s reported everything, but the IRS shows payroll records and W-2s from several employers he’s never worked for—all filed under his Social Security number. They begin garnishing his wages for years of supposed back taxes and penalties. This nightmare drags on for years. He can’t get anyone—cops, DMV, IRS, or Social Security Administration—to fix it. He ends up just paying the IRS $150 a month to keep them from taking even more, even though none of it is his debt.

Finally, after enormous effort, he discovers the truth: a Guatemalan illegal immigrant had stolen his identity years earlier. That man had been using his Social Security number to work multiple jobs, get a Missouri driver’s license, rack up DUIs, and—in a crash that was an accident after his car malfunctioned—killed a man on a bike. The victim’s family even sued the identity thief (under the American man’s name). So no, identity theft in this case was far from a 'victimless crime.'

One innocent family lost quite a lot because someone decided to live in this country under a stolen name.

Also, I'm sure the church thinks it's doing the 'right' thing, but the right thing is to encourage their members to be honest and forthright, and not harm others just because it benefits them.

Borrowing implies you asked someone for something and they agreed to share it with you. That's hardly the case. Social Security numbers aren't something one can 'share'. Sorry.

Sorry, but I'll save my sympathy for the American man who was the actual harmed party in this nightmare.
