Hero teen Kendrick Castillo reportedly died after tackling one of the Highlands Ranch shooters

The Douglas County, Colo. Sheriff’s Department held a news conference on Wednesday and we learned a little more about the shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch that left one student dead and 8 injured.

First up, deputies who arrived at the scene ran into the building to catch the shooters:

Deputies reportedly arrived at the schooling “within two minutes of gunfire breaking out”:

And no gunfire was exchanged between deputies and the suspects:

There are early reports that students inside the school helped subdue one or both suspects:

Kendrick Castillo, 18, has been identified as the lone fatality in the attack:

According to one of the students who gave an interview to the “TODAY Show,” Castillo died after tackling one of the suspects. From USA Today:

Three of the eight wounded remained hospitalized Wednesday. The family of Kendrick Castillo confirmed to multiple media outlets that the 18-year-old student was killed.

“I want people to know about him,” Castillo’s father, John Castillo, told ABC News.

Nui Giasolli told NBC’s “Today” show she was in a literature class when fellow student Erickson came in late, walking around the room and opening and closing doors.

“The next thing I know he’s pulling a gun and he is telling nobody to move,” she said. Castillo was among several students who tackled the shooter, she said. The struggle gave “all of us enough time to get underneath our desks, to get ourselves safe and to run across the room to escape,” she said.

“They were very heroic,” she said of the students. “I can’t thank them enough.”
