Andy Richter compares Donald Trump to abusive stepdad; Americans to 'battered' family members

Conan O’Brien’s sidekick Andy Richter weighed in on Donald Trump’s big speech last night to a joint session of Congress, comparing the president to an abusive stepdad and Americans to battered family members:

We assume Richter is referencing people like Chris Cillizza and Van Jones who gave the president high marks for the speech and think this means there’s a “new Trump” on the way:

But is the television comic correct?

The Washington Post’s Robert Costa is reporting that even administration officials within the Trump White House are surprised at how well the president’s speech was received by the pundit class:
