Members of the media are hitting back at President Donald Trump after he called out the “damned dishonest” media during his rally in Phoenix on Tuesday for how his comments post Charlottesville were reported.
Here’s the “damned dishonest” clip from the rally where the president accused the media of ignoring his denouncement of hate groups like the KKK and neo-Nazis:

Jim VandeHei, CEO and co-founder of Axios:
To family/friends who support Trump: what he said last night about reporters was despicable, extremely deceptive, dangerous…
— Jim VandeHei (@JimVandeHei) August 23, 2017
…Claim bias. Fine. Claim elitism. Fine. Claim the press hyperventilates/bloviates. Fine…
— Jim VandeHei (@JimVandeHei) August 23, 2017
…But to say reporters erase America's heritage, don't love America, turn off cameras to hide truth, are to blame for racial tension…
— Jim VandeHei (@JimVandeHei) August 23, 2017
…is just plain wrong. I worked w/ reporters like Daniel Pearl who died a gruesome death seeking truth; scores die yearly exposing facts…
— Jim VandeHei (@JimVandeHei) August 23, 2017
…There are great Americans deeply concerned about a changing nation. God forbid one buys Trump's mad rant and takes action…

And here’s CNN’s Sara Murray, who expressed similar feelings toward the president:
This anecdote in @wpjenna's piece on Trump's rally breaks my heart a little bit. (1/8) pic.twitter.com/RrYMKLybGZ

Most of the people at these rallies – even ones booing – treat it as a joke & are still friendly to journalists who chat w/them (2/8)
— Sara Murray (@SaraMurray) August 23, 2017
But there are some who treat Trump's "fake news" diatribes seriously. (3/8)
— Sara Murray (@SaraMurray) August 23, 2017
They believe it when Trump lies about the cameras being turned off. They harass reporters and photographers. (4/8)
— Sara Murray (@SaraMurray) August 23, 2017
Trump knows what he's saying is false. Ppl close to him know it puts journalists at risk just for doing their jobs. He does it anyway. (5/8)
— Sara Murray (@SaraMurray) August 23, 2017
But being a journalist is still the best damn job in the world. (6/8)

We get the first crack at writing history. It's a challenge and a privilege we don't take lightly. (7/8)

We can hold our leaders accountable and still love our country. And we do. (8/8)

But why is the media playing Trump’s game? Ben Shapiro writes:
Media still don't understand Trump's game: by responding emotionally to Trump's rip, they grant credibility to his case.
— Ben Shapiro (@benshapiro) August 23, 2017
His entire case is that they hate him on a root level, a gut level. Instead of coolly attempting to refute him, they go completely bats***.

Every. Single. Time.
