About face: Walter Reed will not restrict dining hall access to severely wounded troops

Fortunately the U.S. military decided not to follow through with a decision that would have severely inconvenienced wounded warriors housed in a building for multiple amputees and patients receiving long-term care at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. The decision, had it been implemented, would have among other things invalidated wounded warriors’ meal tickets to a dining area just down the hall:

From Fox News:

The U.S. military has reversed a string of decisions that would have restricted access for severely wounded troops to a popular dining hall at Walter Reed hospital, after Fox News began reporting on complaints from veterans and their families.

The military earlier this month decided to invalidate meal tickets and reduce hours for the Warrior Cafe, the sole dining facility in building 62 — home to all multiple amputees and long-term, recovering patients at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md.

If the original plan had stayed in place, wounded warriors wanting to use their meal tickets would have had to make their way to a dining hall about a half mile away, according to the Fox News report.

The wounded warriors have been informed of the reversal:

It’s a shame it was ever planned in the first place.
