Rolling Stone: The Next President Must Vow to Restore the White House to What It Was Before Trump

AP Photo/Alex Brandon

As Twitchy reported earlier on Monday, Rep. Ted Lieu knew what the next (Democrat) president had to do: commit to restoring the White House, the Kennedy Center, and Washington, D.C., to what they were before President Trump's second term. OK, we'll undo the renovations to the Kennedy Center, put the leaks back in the roof, and restore all of the pro-Hamas graffiti to Columbus Circle (and promise to do so with fireworks and music).

Rolling Stone had the same idea. A lot of people have had the same idea. Disgraced former congressman Eric Swalwell had said last fall, "Don’t even think of seeking the Democratic nomination for president unless you pledge to take a wrecking ball to the Trump Ballroom on DAY ONE."

Rolling Stone and Swalwell share the same level of relevance these days.

Who knew so many people were so attached to the "beautiful" East Wing? We must rebuild it exactly as it was.

John Avlon writes:

This is an Atlantic City mob-boss tactic, and it fits a pattern. Trump has tried to remake the Kennedy Center in his own image. He paved the Rose Garden. He’s building a massive triumphal arch and suggested naming it after himself. He has slapped gilded skid marks on every surface of the White House. The gilding can be scraped off. Buildings cannot be un-demolished.

So here is a modest proposal. The Democrats running for president should pledge to take down Trump’s luxury ballroom and rebuild the East Wing as it was, restoring the historic symmetry of the White House. Whatever underground security structures have been built should stay: anything practical and related to national security belongs there. But the monument to one man’s ego above ground should be swept into the ash-heap of history.

"Historic symmetry." What did people do before 1942, when the White House wasn't symmetrical?

An actual dignified, indoor structure in which to hold state events and host foreign leaders. Not tarps and porta-potties.

Fine … let that be the campaign platform of all of the Democratic candidates in 2028: impeach Trump and demolish the ballroom. Make sure there's a show of hands at the primary debates of every candidate who wants the ballroom torn down.
