“We will not tell you how or if you ought to see this,” reads a sign next to a diorama at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. However, they seem to have hung a screen in front of it so you at least can’t say you weren’t warned when you see a “culturally insensitive” depiction of lions attacking a person of color. Know also that “the accuracy and the scientific content has been questioned and remains uncertain.”
Stop treating people like a bunch of babies! (someone sent me this from the Carnegie Museum of Natural History) pic.twitter.com/ZvmbKWXimt

That poor camel.

Looks like the Person of Color™️ is about to win the argument, which of course will kick off more objections from people who don’t think a human being should ever kill an animal.

Dude's braced to stab that cat. Pretty cool.
— Quena González (@QuenaGonzalez) February 15, 2021
This is a pretty cool diorama.

Amazing what complaints can get through the wickets once you attach "race" to it.

I know that diorama and have admired it. The last time I was there, they had a stupid sign up about how the creator's diorama's were culturally problematic, but they hadn't yet hidden the darned thing. Shame on the curators.

That thing used to mesmerize me when I was a kid on field trips there.

If the guy had been white the sign would have talked about lack of diversity. Its a game you can't win, but that's not the point of it.

starting to think this is all a viral marketing ploy because I want to go see what else they have now

Am I missing some historical context for why "depicting a lion attacking a person of color" would be considered insensitive? I really don't even understand this.
— Michael Clayton (@GoodMagic8) February 15, 2021
Just say the lion represents white privilege. Then it’s all better.
— Isle_of_Lucy (@Rogueprosecutor) February 15, 2021
How do we know that the man was not knocking the lion off its camel ride?
Or maybe the lion and man were walking along together and the camel scooped up the man on his back and the lion is now trying to save the man from being abducted.
Every possibility must be studied.

Oh yeah, as a kid growing up near Pittsburgh, when we would take field trips to the museum that was almost as cool as the dinosaurs.
Oh, and they took it down https://t.co/Ibc6p0UzGQ

or, rather, covered it up as you noted.

I need therapy after seeing pics of this?? People spend way too much time looking for stuff to be offended by. When are they going to realize they are the problem?

As someone who grew up in Africa, I can confirm that the lion depicted in this display is an African lion and most African people are people of color ?

All I see is an example of man’s complicated relationship with nature as both ruler and prey. Only a racist would worry about his race. A non-racist is able to relate to this character as see himself in the Bedouin.

I think we should all see it as a fellow human being attacked. I mean, isn’t that really the goal?
— Gary, MA professional counseling (@GaryCGeorge) February 15, 2021
NARRATOR: That is not really the goal.
