Debra Messing backs petition to force Congress and White House staff to carry clear backpacks

Be careful what you wish for, we said, as hundreds of thousands marched on Washington, D.C., and around the country ostensibly to rally for school safety (which for many seemed to mean shutting down the NRA and banning the AR-15 rifle and other weapons like it).

But when Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students returned to class, they found out they would be required to carry clear backpacks and a student ID badge — something student David Hogg called “unnecessary” and “embarrassing.”

It’s one thing to whine about clear backpacks and how your school “is starting to feel like a prison,” but one wit started a petition on MoveOn.org to force members of Congress and White House staffers to also carry clear backpacks, briefcases, and the like.

The March For Our Lives organizers are asking for: Passing a law to ban the sale of assault weapons, prohibiting the sale of high-capacity magazines, closing the loophole in our background check law for online and gun show purchases.

Until these demands are met, we should ask Trump, Pence, Ryan, McConnell, and the entire Congressional and White House staff to be required to only use clear backpacks.

Actress Debra Messing threw her star power behind the effort, which as of this writing stands at 682 signatures.

“If the Parkland kids have to — seems only fair,” she reasons. President Trump might have the Secret Service protecting him at all times, but sure, the idea makes perfect sense — who knows what Nancy Pelosi is packing in that designer handbag?

Boy, those clear backpacks must really chafe — the kids are almost as worked up about them as they were about AR-15s. Blame the NRA?
