This again: Ajit Pai tweets about his favorite movie, reignites panic over net neutrality

Remember how the repeal of Obama-era net neutrality rules was going to kill everyone — that was before the GOP tax cuts killed everyone if we remember correctly.

Remember the viral tweet about Google searches costing $2 a pop if net neutrality were rolled back?

Remember NARAL entering panic mode because the “impact on reproductive freedom” because the repeal of net neutrality would “likely be devastating” to women searching for information on reproductive health?

Despite all of the media pieces at the time depicting him as history’s greatest monster, FCC Chairman Ajit Pai is just a normal guy who enjoys things like movies.

On Monday, Pai tweeted about the anniversary of “the greatest film in the history of cinema”: “The Big Lebowski.”

That inspired the folks at Mashable to reignite the long-dormant debate over net neutrality:

Is that what he wants to do? Marcus Gilmer writes:

As he zeroes in on the day on which he can finally smother net neutrality with a pillow, FCC Chairman Ajit Pai took to Twitter on Tuesday to celebrate the 20th anniversary of The Big Lebowski, a movie that’s going to be harder, and more expensive to stream when net neutrality goes away.

Pai has been the driving force behind the effort kill net neutrality, something the FCC accomplished in December via a partisan 3-2 vote. The beginning of the end for net neutrality is currently scheduled for the not-too-distant future of April 23, 2018.

The repeal of net neutrality could pave the way for tiered internet speed access, meaning consumers and companies would be charged more for faster internet. And, to put it in terms maybe Pai would understand, paying more money is something that the Dude just wouldn’t abide, man.

Wow, you mean companies could charge more for faster internet access? What happened to all the stories of mass casualties?

We’ll have you know that drunk hobo was a successful heart surgeon before the net neutrality repeal forced him to live in a boxcar. Now he can’t afford Netflix and has to watch a junkyard burn barrel for entertainment.

No wonder Alyssa Milano and Bernie Sanders were such huge opponents of its repeal.
