'You are extraordinary!': School Kindness Club replaces restroom mirrors with messages of affirmation

While Rockville High School in Maryland is dealing with a backlash against illegal immigrants sheltered within the district after a horrifying rape in a school restroom, ABC News reports that a California school is tackling a very different problem in the girls’ restroom at Laguna Hills High School: self-esteem.

The project was the idea of a member of the school’s Kindness Club and involved plastering messages such as, “You are beautiful” and “You are enough,” in the school bathroom. The signs even cover the mirrors, so that girls see messages of positivity rather than their reflections.

“The signs have helped people remember that everyone is beautiful, everyone is important, everyone is good enough, and everyone should be treated equally,” said Sabrina Astle, 17. “I did this because I am passionate about the fact that everyone is important and everyone needs to be cared for.”
