Dreamfest deferred: Rachel Dolezal won't appear at annual MLK celebration after community backlash

Those craving their fix of Rachel Dolezal news need only wait until the end of March, when her book, “In Full Color: Finding My Place in a Black and White World,” is set to be published.

That’s good news for the people of the Town of Cary, N.C., who were hoping that Dolezal would be part of the community’s Martin Luther King Jr. Dreamfest in January.

As it turns out, Dolezal will not take part in a panel discussion on racial identity and race relations after the community reportedly responded negatively to the announcement that the former president of the Spokane, Wash., chapter of the NAACP  would play a  part in the weekend’s diversity summit.

“We had two focus group meetings with citizens and pastors,” said Doug McRainey, Cary’s director of parks, recreation and cultural resources Wednesday, “and I think the feeling was that her presence would take away from the goals of the Dreamfest.”
