The Amarillo Police Department has released the name of a suspect shot and killed today in what officials have described as a “workplace violence event” at an area Walmart during which a disgruntled employee took two people hostage at gunpoint.

Police responded earlier Tuesday after receiving reports of an active shooter situation at an Amarillo Walmart store.

News Channel 10 reports:

Lt. Erick Bohannon with Special Crimes identified the suspect as 45-year-old Mohammad Moghaddam, a former employee of Walmart. Bohannon said there had been a dispute between Moghaddam and one of his managers. The manager was one of the people held hostage, Bohannon said.

The city’s police department, state troopers, and the Randall County Sheriff’s Office among other agencies all reported to the location around 11 a.m. when the first calls were received. Just over an hour later, tactical units entered the building, located the suspect, and fatally shot Moghaddam.

Texas Rep. Mac Thornberry issued a brief statement Tuesday afternoon:

I want to commend the Amarillo Police Department, other law enforcement officers, and first responders for their handling of today’s incident. While further information is sure to come, what we know is that no one other than the suspect was injured. Every day law enforcement officers stand ready to protect the public, even at the risk of their own lives. Especially in recent months, I do not believe they get the thanks they deserve. Today we have all been reminded.

ABC 7 reports that Moghaddam possibly became angry when he was passed over for a promotion.
