DC Metro train stuck in tunnel — one day after hearing on safety of DC Metro

More than 150 riders on a DC Metro train had to be evacuated today after the train got stuck in a tunnel, possibly under the Potomac River — one day after the House Oversight Committee solicited stories of riders’ experiences on the system.

The hearing ran on time yesterday, but the trains in Washington today were another story.

Fortunately, the passengers were evacuated safely. The jam did halt train traffic on two lines for quite a while, though.

Ironically, today’s mishap occurred just one day after DC Metro administrators testified before the House Oversight Committee on “DC Metrorail Services and Safety,” telling Congress that the Metro needs around $25 billion over the next decade to run the system, fix critical safety issues, and catch up on years of neglected maintenance.
