'I got swarmed': Post-Dispatch reporter beaten, robbed while covering Ferguson break-ins

In Twitchy’s coverage of the looting that began last night in Ferguson, Mo., St. Louis Dispatch reporter Paul Hampel showed that he was very much on the front lines, providing unique and essential coverage of the looting and traffic disturbances happening on West Florissant Ave. Here are his most recent and final tweets from last night’s chaos before he was mugged.

Fellow reporter Joel Currier notes that Hampel has been hospitalized for injuries sustained while covering the “protests.”

Kim Bell of the Post-Dispatch writes today:

Hampel said he was taking photos and videos of break-ins along West Florissant Avenue shortly before he was attacked. Suddenly, he said, he was rushed from behind.

“I got swarmed, beaten down really bad,” he said.

The attackers punched him in the face, hit him in the head at least three times and kicked him in the back of the head when he was on the ground, Hampel said.

The attackers took his phone and wallet and left.

Hampel says he suffered a concussion in the attack and was hospitalized overnight for evaluation.
