AP notes passage of 'far-reaching' anti-abortion bill; Opponents start Gosnell drinking game

The writers at the Associated Press hate to break it to you, but the House today passed the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. Seeing as breaking the news is their job, though, they went out of their way to highlight that the House is dominated by the GOP, and the Republicans’ latest anti-abortion legislation is even more far-reaching than usual. You conservatives were warned about “overreaching,” right?

So, this “far reaching” legislation must be really extreme, right? Inspired by the recent Kermit Gosnell trial that brought the literally gory details of late-term abortion to the public consciousness, the bill would limit abortions in most cases to the first 20 weeks after conception.

House Speaker John Boehner tweeted his support of the bill, adopting the #TheyFeelPain hashtag promoted by pro-life groups.

Opponents of the legislation made a “drinking game” out of the proceedings, insisting that the Gosnell murder case has nothing to do with legal abortions, which are safe and sterile (sometimes).

Democrats portrayed the vote as a revival of the GOP’s war on women, with Rep. Louise Slaughter leading the charge.

At one point, Slaughter accused Republican members of the House Judiciary Committee of believing “that rape is really not so bad.” Authors of the bill included exceptions for rape and incest on the condition that the crimes be reported to authorities.

The White House last night issued a statement on the bill, saying it’s a direct challenge to Roe v. Wade and shows contempt for women’s health and the Constitution.
