After they handed Elon Musk the keys to Twitter, there was some noise being made about paying $20 a month to keep your blue check. That seems pretty steep, and the super-famous like David Hogg thought that Twitter should be paying him and other blue checks for their tweets; after all, the blue checks are the reason the rest of us flock to Twitter, right?
To us, it makes sense to give a blue check to anyone who can prove who they are. Musk on Tuesday called the current system a “lords and peasants” system, which we can fully back. However, his solution is to sign up for Twitter Blue at $8 a month.
Twitter’s current lords & peasants system for who has or doesn’t have a blue checkmark is bullshit.
Power to the people! Blue for $8/month.

But wait, there’s more!
You will also get:
– Priority in replies, mentions & search, which is essential to defeat spam/scam
– Ability to post long video & audio
– Half as many ads— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) November 1, 2022
Hey, not all of us have $44 billion to spend.
I agree but there still should be a verification system for people who are frequently impersonated by fake accounts. I like the idea of a blue check for actual public figures (not obscure media people with 600 followers) and a different color for other verified accounts.

My offer still stands …
Dear @elonmusk …
I'll pay $1,000 per month if you give me, and only me, a special brown check mark (skid mark) verification to represent all turds on this platform.

Ok, as long as folks aren't locked out/suspended for political reasons.

What can I get for $5 dollars in these difficult economic times?

Genuine Qs for @elonmusk — are you serious? How can Twitter launch this after (and likely still) they've throttled our accounts, shadowbanned us, and suspended us for sharing factual reporting they disliked? Shouldn't you fix that first? https://t.co/uiGjYLUulk
— Dana Loesch (@DLoesch) November 1, 2022
Validating accounts was done to stop malicious misrepresentation before it became a dippy popularity contest. IMO, everyone should have a validated account. I don't care enough about a checkmark to pay for it. I'm throttled all the same either way.
— Dana Loesch (@DLoesch) November 1, 2022
I meant, paying for it only makes sense if you like being abused, throttled, shadowbanned, suspended for saying pronouns.
— Dana Loesch (@DLoesch) November 1, 2022
Are you going to end Twitter’s shadow-banning and censorship of conservatives before charging them money?
Because Twitter already has a lords and peasants system, and it has nothing to do with blue checkmarks. https://t.co/Ixd7OSUGsG
— Sean Davis (@seanmdav) November 1, 2022
For example, @elonmusk: I don’t exist on this platform if you don’t already follow me. Search for my name or username and see what shows up in the search bar. Not me. Why would anyone on the right pay for the privilege of being on a platform that makes them invisible?
— Sean Davis (@seanmdav) November 1, 2022
Fix the garbage censorship and ideological shadow-banning on this platform before even thinking about charging for it. pic.twitter.com/aQyzmYewJ8

Yes @elonmusk needs to look into this exact scenario.

Some of us would be willing to pay an added monthly fee to support a true free speech alternative on social media if Musk keeps his word. Of course, for full disclosure, I would first have to get a blue check to get charged for a blue check… https://t.co/nR3FtnDtSA
— Jonathan Turley (@JonathanTurley) November 1, 2022
Doesn’t paying for Twitter make it more of a lords and peasants system?

Update:
Oh no, please don’t leave, Stephen King!
$20 a month to keep my blue check? Fuck that, they should pay me. If that gets instituted, I’m gone like Enron.
— Stephen King (@StephenKing) October 31, 2022
We need to pay the bills somehow! Twitter cannot rely entirely on advertisers. How about $8?
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) November 1, 2022
I will explain the rationale in longer form before this is implemented. It is the only way to defeat the bots & trolls.
