Some of us have warned about AI and robots and the dangers inherent therein. We've all seen 'The Terminator' movies, after all.
So last night, when Oregon State tweeted out warnings about robots and bombs to students, well, things could've gotten interesting:
Urgent OSU Alert: Bomb Threat in Starship food delivery robots. Do not open robots. Avoid all robots until further notice. Public Safety is responding.
— Oregon State University (@OregonState) October 24, 2023
'Avoid all robots until further notice' sounds like something straight out of a dystopian sci-fi movie.
The thread continues:
Bomb Threat update: Remotely isolating robots in a safe location. DPS continuing the investigation. Remain vigilant for suspicious activity.
— Oregon State University (@OregonState) October 24, 2023
Bomb Threat update: Robots are being investigated by technician. Stay vigilant and report any incident related information to 737-7000.

Emergency is over. All Clear. You may now resume normal activities. Robot inspection continues in a safe location.
— Oregon State University (@OregonState) October 24, 2023
All robots have been inspected and cleared. They will be back in service by 4pm today.

Naturally, Twitter/X had some fun with things:
We tried to warm them about the danger of the robots.

They did not heed the warnings.

We chuckled.
“Avoid all robots until further notice” was not on my 2023 bingo card https://t.co/5VlWWuW8uG

But if it was, you probably win the prize.
Imagine seeing this is a headline just 10-20 years ago. 😅

“Avoid all robots until further notice…”@greggutfeld has been warning us for well over a decade about the danger of robots. But nobody listens. https://t.co/rjiN3ZTcGW
Everyone keeps coming back to the 'avoid all robots' line.

Actually laughed out loud at this one.
Seeing this tweet is pretty much the first time I have felt like I was living in The Future https://t.co/Mu0OuR5ADp

And what a time to be alive.
That's one technique to keep people from stealing from delivery bots. https://t.co/bhKA4ftrEi

It sure is.
5 minutes after reading this my Roomba turned on and I started smashing it with a frying pan I am not taking any chances I knew this day would come. https://t.co/frO8YSP0cS

Probably a wise move. RIP, Roomba.
The evil cyborgs know our weaknesses. Death will come with a pizza delivery. https://t.co/eeSHeQMBJl

But if it's a white pizza? Worth it.
"AI is so helpful," they said.
— KGVAlum🇮🇱✡️✈️ (@Staceyryn) October 25, 2023
"Imagine the possibilities of robots," they said.
Honestly, it's like Ray Bradbury is writing news updates. https://t.co/RI0UgaoFHp
Sure feels that way.
Feel like if my grandfather had seen this tweet thread in 1973 his first question would have been, “What’s a tweet?”
— Dawg Sports (@dawgsports) October 25, 2023
But after that the other obvious questions would have come fast and furious. https://t.co/07yxht7Wrb
We're sure there are so many questions.
These aren't the droids you're looking for. https://t.co/HxHKDdWcRk

Force powers, for the win.
But it turns out it wasn't the great robot uprising of 2023. So what was it?
Well,
Oregon State says suspect in custody for bomb threat involving food delivery robots. https://t.co/DpVqcwh1q5

Oregon State University says a suspect is in custody for a bomb threat involving food delivery robots.
Just before 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, the university posted on X, formerly Twitter, that there was a bomb threat involving Starship food delivery robots. The university began asking people not to open the robots and to avoid all robots until further notice.
By 1 p.m., the university said the robots were remotely isolating in a safe location. A law enforcement dog trained in bomb detection inspected all robots and shortly before 2 p.m., all robots were cleared with none containing explosive devices.
A suspect believed to be responsible for the threat has been arrested, according to Oregon State University.
Yikes.
Did not have food delivery robot bomb threats on my bingo card. https://t.co/XXFFgyVfwb
— A.P. Dillon (@APDillon_) October 25, 2023
Neither did we.
So stay vigilant. You never know when the robots will rise up.
