Shackles and Shakedowns: Gavin Newsom Seeks to Shame California Companies With Ties to Slavery

AP Photo/Eric Risberg

Democrats are desperately looking for white-on-black racism since the party needs it to survive. Sadly for the Democrat Party, there’s high demand on their side of the aisle but virtually no supply on the other. So California Gov. Gavin Newsom is looking to the past for his party’s latest shakedown. Newsom wants companies to dig into their history for ties to slavery.

Here’s more. (READ)

Gavin Newsom uses the open of his podcast to sign a bill forcing companies to dig for slavery ties -- and make them public.

"This is a bill that requires large companies that operated before 1965 to search their records for ties to slavery, going back to 1849."

"And then we make it public."

"Accountability starts with the truth."He's announcing the launch of a corporate guilt record to set the stage for reparations, set to a cheesy soundtrack.

This guy wants to be president.

Many see this as an attempt to put corporations on the hook for Democrats’ simmering plans for reparations handouts. Newsom and his fellow Democrats likely hope to shame long-established companies into bearing the brunt of the payouts. (WATCH)

Everything Newsom does is performative and fake. No surprise here.

Posters find it interesting that Democrats keep bringing up slavery when their party’s history is steeped in it, and the Republican Party was created to end it. On the surface, Gavin’s plan makes less sense since California was never a slave state.

Newsom and Democrats likely are starting in California for this very reason and will then extend their shakedown to the Southern states where Republicans are mostly in power.

Companies formed after Civil Rights get a pass. One commenter asked Grok to evaluate the impact of Newsom’s plan on businesses in the Golden State.

AB 2599 covers businesses doing business in CA with over $100M in worldwide annual gross receipts that existed (or had a predecessor) on or before Dec. 31, 1964. They must search their records (and related entities') from 1849 for any slavery ties—buying/selling enslaved people, using them as collateral, loans, insurance, or facilitation—and file a public perjury-risk affidavit. No official total exists; all firms over $100M in CA number in the thousands, but the 1964 cutoff limits it to those with older roots. Needs funding to implement.

No comprehensive public tally exists, so estimates vary. Fortune 500 firms with clear pre-1865 roots already number around 15-20 (BNY, JPMorgan, Cigna, Colgate, P&G, Deere, CSX, McKesson, NY Life and others). Factoring in mid-size banks, insurers, manufacturers, and long merger chains that still clear $100M typically pushes the total into the dozens or low hundreds

Still plenty of millions to be extracted through shaming.

Posters don’t understand why any company chooses to remain in California with a constant target painted on them by the Democrat Party.

One would think Newsom’s presidential hopes would be dashed by now, given his record of mishandling California. But with a thin bench of presidential contenders and Democrats needing someone white, straight, and non-Jewish at the top of the ticket, he’s probably still one of their best hopes to retake the White House. Reparations certainly won’t hurt Newsom or the Democrats with black and young voters — two groups they need in a national election.
