The Syrian Electronic Army, which supports Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, has apparently hacked into and seized control of the Twitter account belonging to Human Rights Watch.

According to Mashable, the Syrian Electronic Army “uses social media platforms such as Twitter and YouTube to counter the claims of the rebel Free Syrian Army. It coordinates massive spam attacks against anyone it perceives to be anti-government, posting thousands of pro-government messages in news article comment threads and on public officials’ Facebook pages as a sort of digital sit-in.”
The Syrian hackers also appear to have taken control of Human Rights Watch’s website and/or blog. The following screenshot shows a message posted on HRW’s website:
