It’s going to be a while before the bitter clingers are ready to relinquish their masks. Maybe it’ll never happen. Who can really know for sure right now?
One thing we do know is that we’re going to enjoy the irrational meltdowns over being told that masks, which haven’t really been shown to do much to prevent the spread of COVID, are optional but that anyone who wants to wear a mask is free to continue to do so. And there will be many, many meltdowns.

That’s going to be Twitter every day. As long as folks like former Biden senior COVID response adviser Andy Slavitt have anything to say about it:
If airlines can ask us not to eat peanuts on board if there is someone with a peanut allergy, why won’t they ask us to wear a mask if there’s an unvaccinated 4 year old or cancer patient on board?

Wow. Great question, Andy! Really profound! And not at all indicative of willful ignorance.
We kid of course. Andy Slavitt’s question is profoundly stupid.
The replies are like a triggered group therapy session. https://t.co/p62jvKIiGN pic.twitter.com/ivTwJzWHJJ

They really are. Here’s a taste:
Apparently @ASlavitt & I were on a wavelength this morning: https://t.co/GKRUaki59L

Because the 4-year-old or cancer patient will experience the harm days later, long after you've settled into your resort, whereas the peanut allergy victim will experience anaphylaxis mid-air, requiring an emergency landing and unduly delaying your pina colada.

Same with schools and medical offices. Can’t send your kid to school with a peanut butter sandwich but can send them to school unmasked to potentially let them bring home a deadly virus to an immunocompromised adult or other child. https://t.co/8DmxMMOKM9

As a Stage IV cancer patient, it’s baffling and absurd. https://t.co/e84XE4sLNi

We’re sorry to hear you have cancer and wish you only the best, but approaches to COVID mitigation like Andy Slavitt’s don’t really have any basis in science. And we have to ask why unvaccinated 4-year-olds or cancer patients or any immunocompromised person was safer flying inside of a metal box with recirculated air prior to the COVID pandemic. Passengers could still carry and pass along potentially deadly viruses or diseases, but there were no mask mandates then. An immunocompromised person who could die from a cold before COVID could still die from one now. It’s a harsh reality, but it’s reality nonetheless.
What did those 4-year olds and cancer patients do before Covid?
Do that. https://t.co/IxK8Kb54ko

Hardcore mask mandate proponents are hiding behind masks themselves. They’re hiding behind the mask of being concerned for others’ welfare. And they’re hiding behind the mask of understanding science. When it comes to COVID, at least, a mask will not be the difference between life and death.
A lot of angry quote-tweets on this tweet because a lot of people can't accept that the vast majority of us want to move on after two years of this. https://t.co/XLzpVvFp3Y

I love that some of them are like "I just had a kidney transplant and my daughter has CF and cancer and HIV." Then why are you on a goddamn plane and relying on my ineffective cloth mask to save you???
