The New York Post dropped a story earlier today that really could have written itself: immigrant-owned shops in East Harlem dared to oppose Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s government supermarket plan, and now the city’s Sanitation Department is magically finding plenty of reasons to write tickets.
Color me SHOCKED.
The Multicultural Business Coalition filed a class-action lawsuit this week, arguing taxpayer-backed grocery stores will undercut the small markets that already serve those neighborhoods. Because they will.
These are flower shops, delis, and meat counters run by people who work seven days a week and still have to translate city paperwork for neighbors who do not speak English. They remember what happened after Costco opened nearby in 2010. Stores vanished. They do not want a municipal sequel.
Coalition chairman Frank Garcia says the citations started stacking up once organizers went door to door seeking support for the suit.

Some fines have hit $1,000.
Yay, socialism.
Sanitation’s line is the usual one. Violations go out “in all corners of the city,” and the only goal is clean streets. Harlem has seen 223 commercial summonses since March. That may be true. The timing still stinks.
Mamdani’s office is “confident” the plan is legal and “important.” A city store selling staples about 30 percent cheaper, on municipal property, with no rent, is not a helping hand. It is City Hall choosing winners. Speak against the experiment, and the ticket book appears. Immigrant entrepreneurs asked for a conversation.
They got a summons instead.
