In this writer's view, the warrior ethos hasn't existed in America in decades.
Enter Donald John Trump. In September 2025, Trump signed an executive order reviving the old 'Department of War' and 'Secretary of War' labels as secondary titles, an effort aimed at putting warfighting back at the center of the Pentagon's public identity.
Now, since this was done by Executive Order, the name can't LEGALLY be changed unless or until Congress changes it, but America's favorite bull in a china shop still had more he wanted to do.
He tapped an officer to lead the department. Not a flag officer, because anyone even remotely involved in military life knows that flag officers are politicians playing dress-up.
Enter Pete Hegseth. Whatever you think of his delivery, the military isn't exactly foreign territory to him. He was commissioned as an Army National Guard infantry officer in 2003 and deployed to Guantanamo Bay, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Along the way, he earned two Bronze Star Medals, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Expert Infantryman Badge, the Joint Commendation Medal, and two Army Commendation Medals before eventually landing at the Pentagon in 2025.

This clip is him through and through; he respects our military and understands its mission. It isn't polished, but it is a necessary statement: DEI and political correctness have destroyed our readiness, and at the end of the day we need fighters willing to do their jobs, not people who, just a decade ago, wouldn't pass a psych eval.

Love the delivery or hate it, nobody needed a translator. Hegseth's point was as subtle as a Claymore: the military exists to fight and win wars, and he wants standards built around that mission.
You can argue about the wording. You can argue about the policy. What you can't argue is that he left anyone wondering what he meant.
At the Pentagon, ambiguity just went AWOL.
