Here is what caused Tapper to respond. Apparently, Martin was upset that he used the phrase “false claims” instead of the word “lie” when questioning Mnuchin about Trump’s tax plan.

Tapper wasn’t done.
When I’m confident someone knows something is false and he or she is saying it anyway, aka birtherism, I call it that. A lie connotes knowledge that what one is saying isn’t true.

I used the word I used. "Lie" connotes saying something that one knows is not true. False is an assessment about the factuality of the claim.

And he continued to call out Martin for failing to explain how the TV One Democratic town hall questions ended up in the hands of Hillary Clinton’s campaign.
