Drive-by media catches man with concealed weapon holding break-in suspect at bay

A television news crew from WFLA was en route to another story yesterday evening when they happened to pass a man pointing a gun at another man in front of a church in what might have looked at first glance like a holdup. When police arrived, though, they determined that the man with the gun was a maintenance worker holding at bay a man suspected of attempting to break into the church.

Reporter Lindsey Mastis writes that the maintenance worker at First Baptist Church in Tampa decided to carry a concealed weapon with him when he went to board up the church doors, after they had been breached earlier in the evening, causing an estimated $4,000 in damage. The suspect returned to the church and was held at gunpoint until police arrived.

John Novobylski, 23, of Illinois, faces a felony charge of criminal mischief.
