Graphic video and stills of gay men being thrown from a tall building to their deaths by ISIS have gone viral this week, giving us the chance to practice the White House’s approved wording in such situations. That is, the brutality and intolerance on display isn’t an example of radical Islam in practice; rather, the gruesome executions are an example of “violent extremism based on a warped view of Islam.” It’s complicated.
