Haaretz, as far as it can be trusted, dropped a "bombshell" report on Tuesday claiming that, after the October 7, 2023 slaughter, there were early offers from Hamas to release all of the civilian hostages days after October 7, which Israeli officials reportedly rebuffed. Mehdi Hasan, who really is lucky that his beeper didn't go off, wants to know where to go for apologies from everyone who insisted that the war would stop (or technically, not even begin) if Hamas released the "civilian" hostages (but not the "prisoners of war" that they claimed most of them to be).

Hamas didn't even know where all the hostages were! Much less had control of where they went!
Various other jihadist groups kept a lot of them captive and would not have been willing to let them go.
If they were going to release them unconditionally why didn't they? It's obvious they know their way to the border when they want to murder people, so one might confidently assume they could find their way back to release the hostages unconditionally.

Hamas didn’t need Israel’s permission to release hostages “unconditionally.” They could’ve just done it. There were clearly conditions of some sort. And how did Hamas define “civilian?” I get why this wasn’t taken seriously and Israel didn’t let it stall their military response.

I imagine that in the days right after 10/7, Hamas realized they were about to get obliterated and offered to give the civilian hostages back in exchange for calling off Israeli retaliation. This would have given Hamas a free pass on the massacre itself. Not a chance

We don't see the problem. Hamas could not have taken hostages in the first place. Hamas could have returned the hostages "unconditionally" in the three weeks that Israel waited to move into Gaza. Israel had the dual mission of rescuing the hostages and completely wiping out Hamas. Or were we just going to forget the 1,200 Israelis they slaughtered?
Hasan is so obviously a terrorist supporter it's a wonder why he even tries to hide it.
