You’ll notice in that tweet that Terry McAuliffe was playing up Youngkin’s endorsement by Donald Trump. NeverTrump conservatives like Bill Kristol were pulling for McAuliffe in fear of a “Trump-lite” governor of Virginia:

So Kristol endorsed McAuliffe because electing Youngkin would be “enabling Trumpist authoritarianism.” But now, Kristol is encouraging his “GOP-adjacent” friends to recruit and fund Youngkin-like alternatives for Senate and help them win.
