The commercially successful, sometimes controversial, and recently troubled artist Thomas Kinkade passed away suddenly tonight in California. He was 54. His name and nickname — “Painter of Light” — were trending on Twitter late Friday night.
Admirers and detractors took to Twitter to share their thoughts — not always kind — about Kinkade’s death.

Despite Kinkade’s death, his paintings will live on. “Art is forever,” Kinkade told “60 Minutes” in 2007. “It goes front and center on your wall, where everyday the rest of your life you see that image. And it is shaping your children, it’s shaping your life.”
