I read JD Vance's latest proposal with great interest today. My son and his fiancée are marrying soon and hope to have a child in the near future. His future wife wants to stay home with their baby with the eventual goal of homeschooling. Thankfully, Florida is very friendly to homeschooling, but it would also be great to have federal policies encouraging women to stay home with their baby.

I also like the idea of requiring couples to be married to collect the benefit. For too long, our social safety nets have benefited single women and discouraged marriage. That is not good for society.
For many couples, $9,000 could make staying home more doable. Babies are better off being home with their mothers. Mothers are happier when they can stay home with their babies. Generally, mothers breastfeed longer when they can stay home. It cuts down on illness and allows better attachment to occur. The advantages are endless.

Benefits should go only to citizens. People on temporary visas, green cards, or any other non-citizen status should be ineligible. Two additional limits worth considering:
- Both parents must be citizens, or
- New citizens cannot collect benefits for the first five years after naturalization.
This is huge and could be life changing for some. Living on one lower income is NOT easy, but it’s so worth it.

Now they’re leaking a half-baked rule two months before the midterms that takes money from the existing child care fund for working parents…
Those proposals were not the same. Biden’s plan directed more money into institutional daycare and pushed children into government schools at even younger ages.
Supporting mothers who stay home with their own children is a different idea entirely. It lets parents pass on their own values instead of letting the government decide what young children should learn.
9k a year is HUGE for families like mine where the wife stays home because she feels a conviction to stay home and raise the kids rather than delegate the wiring of said kids’ worldview and nervous system to strangers.

Part of our social contract is encouraging young families to have children and to raise them well. This idea is a strong start.
