The last time the United States won gold in Olympic men's hockey was 1980—the Miracle on Ice. I was in kindergarten back then. Now, at 50 years old, I've finally seen it happen again. Today—February 22, 2026—Team USA defeated Canada 2-1 in overtime, with Jack Hughes scoring the golden goal at 1:41 to seal the victory. Connor Hellebuyck was a wall in net, stopping 41 shots. It's the first men's hockey gold for the U.S. in 46 years, exactly on the anniversary of that legendary 1980 triumph. My son called me from the fire station (he's on shift today), and I could hear the hooting and hollering in the background—pure joy erupting across the country. A whole new generation now gets to experience the real-life drama that inspired the movie Miracle. What a day for America. The U.S. women's team also took gold earlier, completing an incredible hockey sweep. X has been electric today: Americans uniting to celebrate our Olympians who proudly love their country, while mocking our neighbors to the north.
One of my fondest childhood memories was watching the US beat the Soviets in the 1980 Miracle on Ice with my dad and brother on a tiny black-and-white TV. This amazing win today by USA hockey brought back some good memories. Go USA! 🇺🇸

Jack Eichel - as emotional as I’ve EVER seen him after winning gold with 🇺🇸:

“It just means the world to be here, you know? It’s tough to get it out…I’m so emotional. I’m sorry…I don’t know why…”

Grab your tissues before you read this one.
In the professional sports world, American pro hockey players are like a blast from the past with the unapologetic patriotism. A lot of it has to do with the blue collar nature of the sport. The toughness and physicality is just unmatched. No "Hollywood" culture nonsense.

It's so nice to see men proud to compete for their country. What a nice change after others who took to microphones and disparaged their own country.
The Canadians of Twitter are very angry with me like it's my fault they're great at killing their own citizens but terrible at hockey.

For the uninitiated, beating the Canadians in hockey is like beating the French at surrendering. Huge upset.

Amazingly enough, 46 years later, the U.S. once again defeated the best hockey team a hostile, communistic power could put on the ice!

On the bright side, Syrupeans, your government will off you if you're depressed about being so s****y at hockey. So you have that going for you.

A few tweets dunking on Canada have to be included. That's been a hoot today. They are so mad.

Even our military is happy today.
Like many Upstate New Yorkers, we are a proud hockey family 🏒

I grew up accompanying my younger brother to rinks all over the Northeast and to after school skating classes in local barns.
This year, we introduced the next generation, my four year old son Sam, to hockey. Here… pic.twitter.com/Sn7vNrHYcY
Hopefully, America won't have to wait another forty years for another gold medal in hockey. Judging by the excitement of today, I believe a whole new generation will set their sights on competing for the American Olympic team one day.
