Polls Bear Little Positives for GOP

Polls are not bringing good news for Republicans ahead of the Midterms.

One must dig to find any hint of a positive for Republicans.

National generic ballot poll results can be abundant in election years. The hardship with extrapolating congressional electoral outcomes from national generic ballot polling is somewhat like inferring which presidential candidate will have the most votes to be president, votes that are taken by state, based on national head-to-head polling results. It may or may not provide an accurate representation of how voters nationally are thinking, but it runs into a problem when it must be applied on a state-by-state or district-by-district basis, which these elections are.

If we go back, we learn that too many political polls have produced inaccurate results (results that do not reflect the electorate). Polls are, at best, polls. They are not votes, and they are not comprised of every person who votes. As we are repeatedly reminded, political surveys are too often distorted representations of public sentiment. The results of too many of them have skewed further leftward than reality. Nevertheless, some polls do give a signal, updating a concerned public as to how things are going and portending an outcome. It is not good to throw polls out completely, but it is equally as dangerous to consist a political diet of them.
