In the wake of U.S. House candidate Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) being mocked by Saturday Night Live for a war injury, NBC News reporter Kasie Hunt discussed her interview with Crenshaw about veterans running for office and expressed her appreciation for his service.

She then spent quite a few tweets responding to angry leftists accusing her of politically endorsing Crenshaw.
I’m not endorsing any candidate. I AM saying thanks for serving and saying I think more veterans in Congress is good for our country. If you disagree, we can agree to disagree.

They apparently missed the “party aside” portion of her tweet.
The piece highlighting Crenshaw also included Democrat Amy McGrath. I had another piece just this morning on Sunday TODAY about women vets running — in both parties.

I understand that. I’m not urging voters to pick him over his opponent. I am saying he should not be mocked for his service and that I personally appreciate that he sacrificed for all of us.

I’m a big fan of yours. I’m not endorsing a candidate and it’s not over the line to thank a veteran for their service when their injury is being mocked. I’ve also interviewed Democratic veteran candidates and would say the same about them. Party aside.

I said absolutely nothing about his politics and I did not say anyone should vote for him over his opponent. I would say the same for any Democratic vet in a similar circumstance.

I’ve acknowledged that it could be misread without the broader context. But I was specifically referring to his service and sacrifice when I said people “like him”. I’m obviously not going to change your mind and I’m sorry to have let you down. That’s my thinking.

I just don’t see defending a veteran who is mocked for their wounds as a venial sin. We are going to have to disagree on this.

It isn’t. Whether a Republican or a Democrat, it should never be considered inappropriate to thank a veteran for his or her service.
